Description
The Flip Wilson Show was a variety show from 1970 to 1974 on NBC. It featured comedy skits and musical acts. The show was the highest-ranked variety show during its run and received two Emmys and a Peabody. Wilson won a Golden Globe for his part in the show. It was the last variety show to focus on just one performer. George Carlin was a writer on the show and appeared in front of the camera for several episodes for the news skit. Redd Foxx, one of Wilson's mentors, came on as well.
The show was produced by Bob Henry Productions and Clerow Productions. Clerow Productions was owned by Wilson. Bob Henry was a legendary variety show producer. He was well known for never seeing the color barrier, having also worked with Nat King Cole.
The Jersey City-born actor Wilson went into the Air Force in the 50s, where he became known for his comedic ways, even being used to tour bases to cheer the troops. His nickname Flip came from his ability to flip people out with his outlandish stories. For his variety show, he applied his law of comedy: Be sudden, be neat. Be unimpassioned. If you're serious about something, leave it out.
Such comedic legends as Johnny Carson, Richard Pryor and Bill Cosby came on the show. There were the big names of the day that came on as guests, as well. John Wayne, Lucille Ball, Bing Crosby and Bob Hope were among those well-known stars. Musical guests from B.B. King to The Temptations were known to make an appearance. Legendary gospel singer Mahalia Jackson made her last public appearance on the show.
The show had several well-loved characters. Geraldine Jones, which was Wilson in drag, was the most popular. Her saying, The Devil made me do it, was listed as the number 16 top TV phrase by TV Guide. The computer people took her What you see is what you get for the acronym WYSIWYG.
The Flip Wilson Show is a series that is currently running and has 1 seasons (27 episodes). The series first aired on September 22, 1969.
