EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: In the early 1970s when much of the globe was predicting the terminate of the British motorcycle industry (not unreasonably, as it turned out), Norton was doing all it could to turn the tide. The long-loved merely long-in-the-tooth Commando was beefed upward from 750 to 850 and given, shock horror, an electric starter, while company chairman Dennis Poore (with help from some sponsorship money courtesy of John Role player Special cigarettes) told the team to go out at that place and win some races. And they did. The records bear witness Norton pulled off 14 international race wins in 1972 and '73, many of them on the so-called John Player Specials. Ever keen to profit from track success, Norton started production of an 850 Commando JPS. Only 200-odd were sold, most of them going to the Usa. This bike has just 8,000 miles on the clock and replicates one the possessor had stolen in Paris, hence the unusual black-and-gold paintwork, dorsum in 1975. Run across more than photos hither.

EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: When Japanese manufacturers launched a series of reliable, well-congenital, high-performance, big-capacity motorcycles in the late 1960s and early 1970s, it fix the motorcycle world on its ear. Past and large, British manufacturers were already in turmoil and their response was confused, wearisome coming, and a petty clumsy. And it didn't work. Harley-Davidson responded by cashing in on its ever-reliable patriotic line that 'American motorcyclists buy American motorcycles'. And information technology did piece of work. But the most courageous response came not from Britain or America, just from Europe. Ducati, MV Agusta, Laverda and BMW, rather than trying to compete with Japan'due south bargain-pricing, upped the dues by edifice a series of beautiful, high-performing and oft mitt-made sports bikes. They cost much more — frequently three or four times more than — than the Japanese bikes, claiming the loftier terminate of the motorcycle market with expensive masterpieces. Laverda's twin-cylinder 750SF was 1 of those bikes. Borrowing from Great britain's much loved parallel-twin heritage just every bit from Honda'southward quality control and styling copybook, Laverda'due south large twin was a counter-dial to the Japanese onslaught. Alas, Laverda's efforts weren't enough to relieve the visitor for long. Just they were enough to requite the world some glorious motorbikes. This one, being offered from New Caledonia past a seller willing to ship to Australia, looks similar a superb example. See more than photos hither.

EDITOR TERLICK SAYS: When Kawasaki released the Z1-inspired Z900RS back in 2018, we institute ourselves utterly underwhelmed. But similar the same-era Suzuki Katana, the Z900RS was quite clearly just a modernistic route bike with some bolt-on plastic bits and a retro-familiar pigment job. We didn't like it at all. Which was all rather strange, because when Kawasaki created the Eddie Lawson Replica ZRX1100 in 2000, nosotros thought it was a beauty. Of course, the ZRX was actually a replica of a replica, revisiting the 1982 Eddie Lawson Replica which was a replica of Steady Eddie's 1981 AMA race bike, itself basically a hot KZ1000. This bike of Clive's boasts some sensible upgrades and performance boosts, offering 21st century performance and comfort engineering while paying tribute to a classic former bike and a slap-up racer from the 1980s.
